Now accepting applications! Black Mountain School, a brand new, experimental, alternative arts school in Black Mountain, NC is slated to run this coming spring. With two sessions from May 21 – June 2, and June 4 – June 16 (or both), one can join other students and faculty, hailing from all over the country and internationally, to make something new out of arts education.
In response to the prohibitively high cost of art school, and the proliferation of fine arts degrees, BMS aims to try something different. Similar to a summer camp, and in fact located at a historic summer camp in the mountains of rural North Carolina, the two sessions bring together a unique group of faculty with expertise in art, music, the sciences, documentation, and more. Courses vary depending on the faculty, and students are invited to contribute to their own curriculum.
BMS is based in the spirit of Black Mountain College, a now defunct liberal arts college that emphasized education through the arts. Opened in 1933 and closed in 1957, it allowed for an unprecedented amount of cooperation and collaboration between artists and arts genres. The new BMS narrows the scope to the arts, but remains open-minded about the challenges artists face today, both creatively and professionally. BMS offers a way to explore one’s own artistic potential in an intensive, inclusive, and inviting environment, surrounded by like-minded students and faculty.
